What is storytelling, documentary photography?

What do I mean when I say I'm a storytelling, documentary photographer?

A quick google search will define documentary as using pictures with people involved in real events to provide a factual record or report.

The word photography comes from the Greek and literally means to draw or paint with light.

At Mom Photo Balm, I will guide you through the process of recognizing and capturing light with your own digital camera as you document your own life's story with heartfelt images!

Matching outfits on perfectly posed children all in a row certainly have their place, but that's not where the story is. That's not real life. Life is happening in the kitchen as you prepare meals to nourish your family, perhaps with the harvest from your own garden. It's even happening while you do the dishes and put away the laundry. Life is happening on the couch watching Netflix, as you change another diaper. Life is happening in the bleachers as you cheer on your kid at the ball game. It's happening in the car as you drive from place to place. Life is happening behind the piano, on the trampoline, on your porch, in the church pew, at the doctor's office, at your favorite weekend campsite, and even while you grocery shop. Your hopes, dreams, and sometimes fears in life are shared as you kneel in prayer with your kids before bedtime. From sun up to sun down, life is collection of all the events that occur in a day, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

You need to document that.

It could all change in an instant. (My own story from last week is proof!)

Your story is significant. It deserves to be recorded. No fancy outfit, make-up, or pretty park could ever hope to compare to the story you are living each day, right where you are, just as you are.
